Overview

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) is a key international partner in U.S. efforts to understand and predict change in the Earth’s environment and to conserve and manage coastal and marine resources. Specific benefits are as follows. The IOC:

  • Promotes an integrated global environmental observation and data management system.
  • Provides a global cooperative framework to leverage resources for achieving common environmental assessment and forecasting goals.
  • Leverages financial, human, data, and assets on which the U.S. depends.
  • Advances U.S. climate science, policy and forecasting.
  • Promotes integrated management and sustainable use of the ocean.
  • Collaborates as key partner in Global Earth Observation System of Systems(GEOSS).

The OAR Assistant Administrator is the U.S. Representative to the IOC. IPO coordinates all IOC relations from NOAA to IOC and, with State coordinates the U.S. interagency process.
